A small leather piece at $300–750

Shoppers are buying phone holders, chain wallets and pouches hard. But 14 of the 29 slots for those pieces belong to one luxury house, all at $750 and up. Between $300 and $750, only three slots go to contemporary brands, and two of those are the same clutch on markdown.

For brandsAdd one small leather piece under $600 next season: a phone holder or chain wallet in your signature leather.
For buyersTest a contemporary small-leather-goods edit at the cash wrap. The luxury versions prove the demand.
For retailersThe first store to own this price point gets the gift season. Holiday is eight weeks out.

The trade calls

Buy, watch, ease off

Draft calls from one week of data. They firm up as editions repeat.

Buy into
  • Small leather goods from the big houses at $750–1,200: phone holders, chain wallets, flat pouches
  • Suede shoulder bags and hobos for the holiday reorder
  • Mini nylon as a year-round anchor
Watch
  • Bottega Veneta Notturno pouch: on three lists at $2,600
  • Balenciaga Rodeo: the only style above $4,000 on two lists
  • Frame and kisslock shapes, led by Coach Kisslock
  • Embellished evening bags heading into holiday
Ease off
  • Large structured totes above $1,500. Only the Saint Laurent Shopping tote makes two lists
  • Styles that rank only on markdown. Seven listed styles showed 25–50% off

For brands: a line with nothing small between $300 and $800 is missing the part of the list that moves fastest.

Who paid to be a best seller

Each square is one of the top 20 slots on that retailer's best-seller list. Red squares were sponsored placements.

Seven of Bloomingdale's top 20 were paid placements, including #1 and #3. The buyers were mostly accessible brands: Coach, Tory Burch and Maison de Sabré.

A sponsored rank is a spend signal, not a demand signal. This list counts it at half weight. For brands, the "best seller" shelf is now a retail-media buy.

What buyers are telling meOpen-to-buy is tight and it's going small. Buyers are protecting holiday dollars for pieces under $1,000 that can sell as a gift, and holding big-ticket totes until they see January sell-through. The list says the same thing: small leather goods and entry prices are doing the work.
The style I'd bet onThe suede hobo. It's the fall shape on the list, it reorders cleanly at $400–900, and it doesn't need a markdown to move. If I could place one reorder this week, it's a soft suede shoulder bag in cognac, chocolate or taupe, landed before Thanksgiving.
What the lists missThe cash wrap and resale. Charms, card cases and small leather goods sell at the counter and in gift edits but rarely make a best-seller page. And the icons are trading pre-owned, not new, so the most-wanted bags are often missing from these lists entirely.
One for brandsCheck who's paying to sit above you. If a competitor bought the top slots on a retailer's best-seller shelf, you're losing on placement, not product. Buy the slot for holiday, or put that budget into one small leather piece that earns its rank on its own.

How the list is built

  • Each retailer's public women's handbag best-seller list, read on September 27, 2026 (US sites). Rank, price and sponsored or sale tags recorded.
  • Each bag tagged for shape, size, material and price. Colorways and sizes of one bag grouped as one style.
  • Score: a style earns 1.0 for #1 on a list, falling evenly to near zero at the bottom. Extra versions on one list add a quarter each, up to two. Sponsored slots count half.
  • Retailers order these lists by their own rules; Saks sorts by dollar sales. Nordstrom and Net-a-Porter offer no best-seller sort. One week is a snapshot; the next edition adds week-over-week movement.
  • We publish ranks and our own analysis only. Illustrations are generic drawings, not the products.
